Genicular Artery Embolization

What is a Genicular Artery Embolization?

A Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic knee pain, especially due to osteoarthritis, by reducing inflammation in the knee joint.

How does a GAE work?

The genicular arteries are small blood vessels that supply the lining of the knee joint. In osteoarthritis, increased blood flow to these areas can lead to chronic inflammation and pain. During a GAE, a small catheter is inserted (usually through the groin or foot) and guided to the genicular arteries. Microscopic particles are injected to block the abnormal blood vessels, reducing inflammation and pain.
